MONDI ZIMELE IS OFFERING TRAINING OF UNEMPLOYED YOUTH AS TRADE ARTISANS

Mondi Zimele has committed to training 100 unemployed youth in the Umhlatuze Municipality, as semi-skilled artisans by mid-2026. This is in response to the shortage of skills that contractors face when conducting shuts and major works, and the project will hopefully develop the trainees into fully certified, economically active trade artisans.

Mondi Zimele (MZ) is proud to be to driving a skills development project in Richards Bay, aimed entirely at advancing unemployed youth. Born from the need to upskill local labour to cover the shortage of skills that large industry faces over periods of Shuts and Major Works, MZ has committed to training 100 local work seekers to become semi-skilled artisans in the four trades that are deemed as most lacking in the area: namely, welder, boilermaker, electrical and fitter/turner.

Skills Development Project - Richards Bay

TARGET:

·         >40%: Unemployment rate in Umhlatuze

·         No. of students to graduate from this project = 100

·         50%: Female proportion of fitter class

·         0%: Targeted drop out and failure rate

WHO DID WE PARTNER WITH?

In this ambitious project, Mondi Zimele partnered with the Fibre Processing&Manufacturing Sectoral Education and Training Authority (FP&MSETA), as well as Umfolozi TVET College, to deliver on its mandate

of training four cohorts of 25 students each, totalling 100, at their Richards

Bay Campus, by mid-2026.

The first cohort of 25 students, comprising of 13 welders and 12  fitters/turners, started their training journey at Umfolozi College on February 3rd, 2025. All 25 students graduated on 23 May and the results were astounding. As a group they achieved a 92% average, with zero failures and zero dropouts!

To incentivize the first group of students, MZ also arranged for a first prize to the top welding and fitter/turner student, which was kindly donated by Fabricon (Pty) Ltd.

Making The Trainees More Marketable:

Mondi Zimele also sponsored a professional curriculum vitae (CV) writer to assist the students in making their CV’s look more professional, and who also advised them on how they can better market themselves, when applying for job opportunities.

All students were selected for their high work ethic and commitment to their various trades. All are historically disadvantaged individuals (HDI’s) and reside in the Umhlatuze (Richards Bay) Municipality.

THIS ARTISAN SKILLS DEVELOPMENT FOCUSES ON:

  • Welders
  • Fitters
  • Electricians
