Job Description
The General Assistant will support the municipality's Public Works and Basic Services Department with various site, maintenance, roadwork and general operational activities.
The successful applicant will work under the guidance of the immediate supervisor and assist with preparing work sites, handling materials and equipment, maintaining sewer mechanisms and carrying out basic road and public works activities.
What You Will Do
The successful candidate will:
- Prepare work sites and receive instructions from the immediate supervisor.
- Load and off-load equipment, tools and materials.
- Fasten slings and ropes and assist with guiding or holding materials during loading and off-loading.
- Maintain and clean sewer mechanisms, including sewer lines, septic tanks and manholes.
- Operate the required plant and equipment.
- Prepare required quantities of materials such as concrete and mortar.
- Excavate and backfill trenches and ancillary roadworks.
- Lay and compact materials such as crusher run and asphalt.
- Clean and cut grass and verges using a brush-cutter.
- Assist with placing pre-cast concrete products such as kerbs and pavers.
- Assist with marking and mounting signage on supporting structures.
