Emergency Care Officer Jobs 2026: 7 Permanent Posts Available in Western Cape

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is recruiting 7 Emergency Care Officers at Grade 1 and Grade 3 level for permanent positions within Emergency Medical Services.

Successful candidates will provide emergency medical care across various geographic and clinical service platforms in the Western Cape. These opportunities are available within the Chief Directorate: Emergency and Clinical Support Services.

The positions offer annual salaries ranging from R149 958 to R226 701, depending on the grade.

Minimum Educational Requirements

The educational requirements differ according to the grade:

Emergency Care Officer Grade 1

Applicants must have successfully completed an appropriate Basic Life Support (BLS) course that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA).

Emergency Care Officer Grade 3

Applicants must have successfully completed Intermediate Life Support (ILS) that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA).

Professional Registration Requirements

Applicants must meet the relevant professional registration requirements:

• Grade 1: Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a BAA
• Grade 3: Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an AEA

Candidates who are not yet in possession of the required registration may also apply, subject to the conditions stated in the official advert.

Such candidates will only be considered for appointment if proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed registration fees are submitted on or before the day of the interview.

Requirements and Experience

No experience is required after registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a BAA or AEA.

Knowledge and Skills Required

Applicants should have:

• Excellent knowledge of all levels of emergency care protocols
• Good communication skills
• Good interpersonal skills

What You Need To Have

Applicants must have:

• A valid Code C1 driver's licence
• A valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP)
• Physical fitness
• Mental fitness

What You Will Do

Successful candidates will be expected to:

• Provide quality and efficient roadside-to-bedside definitive emergency care
• Deliver emergency medical services within defined emergency response timeframes
• Work across geographic and clinical service platforms
• Use communication tools provided by the employer to support safe communication regarding patient care protocols
• Maintain administrative functions
• Complete manual and electronic patient care reports
• Submit trip authority log sheets
• Maintain emergency vehicles and equipment
• Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, other services and members of the public
• Provide effective support to supervisors
• Participate in own wellbeing initiatives
