What You’ll Be Doing
As a Trainee Shed Assistant, you’ll support locomotive operations by:
- Assisting with shunting movements of locomotives
- Ensuring locomotives and fuelling areas are clean and safe
- Coupling and uncoupling locomotives (buffers, airbrakes, jumper cables)
- Refuelling and checking fuel & sand levels
- Operating points safely to prevent derailments
- Applying handbrakes and safeguarding stabled locomotives
- Following strict safety and railway working rules
- Maintaining good housekeeping standards
This role plays a key part in ensuring locomotives are roadworthy and ready for operations.
Minimum Requirements
Ø Grade 10 OR
Ø 6 years’ experience in an Operations environment
You must also:
- Be willing to undergo theoretical & practical training
- Pass medical fitness tests (hearing, vision, mental & physical fitness)
- Be prepared for periodic medical and safety assessments
- Be willing to work shifts
